We are incredibly proud to announce that our short film, Muddy Water, has been officially selected for the Calgary International Film Festival 2025. This film is a reflection of a journey we took to the heart of Sandy Lake First Nation in Northern Ontario during the Muddy Water Festival in July 2024.
A Gathering on the Severn River
Sandy Lake, or Neh gaaw saga’igan, is a remote fly-in community located in the boreal forest along the Severn River. It is a place with a deep history, once referred to as Wabitiquayang, which describes the narrow river between Sandy Lake and Finger Lake.
The Muddy Water Festival was more than just a musical event. It featured a lineup of incredible artists including Drezus, Northsidebaby, Stella Standingbear, Adam Banx, JR Rhodes, Mic North, Deafening, Gurlz Gurlz Gurlz, Black Eagle Band, and Tre Chad. Together, we gathered to celebrate music, art, and the spirit of the people.
Investing in the Future
What makes Sandy Lake so special is the people. This is a community that faces significant challenges, yet they consistently choose to invest their time and resources into their youth. The Muddy Water Festival serves as a beacon of hope. Through interactive workshops and performances, the festival encourages young people to pursue their dreams and find strength in self-expression.
In the film, we caught up with Northsidebaby, Mic North, and local community leaders. They shared their personal experiences at the festival and spoke candidly about the issues they face together as a nation. It is a story of unity, creativity, and the belief in what is possible when a community stands together.
From the Land to the Screen
Bringing this story to the Calgary International Film Festival allows us to share the vibrant culture and the voices of Sandy Lake with a wider audience. The film captures the essence of the festival: a celebration that fosters hope and inspires the next generation of creators to find their own path.
We want to thank the community of Sandy Lake First Nation for welcoming us and allowing us to document these powerful moments. We look forward to seeing you at the festival in Calgary.
